This session explores how Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) empowers teachers to build on students’ natural mathematical thinking. Participants will learn how to use student strategies to guide instruction, ask purposeful questions, and create a classroom where all learners can succeed. Through real- world classroom examples and experiences, and hands-on problem solving, educators will leave with practical tools to differentiate instruction, increase engagement, and deepen conceptual understanding in math for every student.
Students in grades 3 and above who are significantly behind in reading require more than typical instruction—they need targeted, intensive intervention. This session explores evidence-based strategies to rebuild foundational skills, including phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency, while accelerating progress toward grade-level expectations. Learn how to identify skill gaps, prioritize instruction, and provide explicit, systematic support for older struggling readers. Whether you are a classroom teacher or interventionist, you will leave with practical tools to help students close gaps, build confidence, and become more proficient, independent readers.
Many teachers lack confidence in our own ability to spell because we did not receive adequate training in phonics in elementary school or college. So, when students come to us with questions about spelling, many of us fall upon the misconception that “English is such a tricky language." The truth is that 97% of words follow a pattern of rules. When teachers understand these rules, we are better equipped to support our students. Teachers of all grade levels and subject areas will leave this session with a deeper understanding of spelling rules and resources to support their students.
Stories are one of the most powerful tools for learning. In this session, participants will explore how storytelling can transform any classroom into a space where students not only learn content but also develop the qualities of a Portrait of a Graduate. Through immersive narratives, character-driven historical moments, and reflective discussion, students practice empathy, critical thinking, communication, adaptability, and confidence. Attendees will see practical examples of how historical storytelling increases engagement while intentionally developing character and leadership skills. This is not just for history teachers. Walk away with strategies to turn lessons into powerful stories that shape both knowledgeable students and strong future citizens.
Join us to explore the Stripes school store, a student-led school-based enterprise at Ozark High School. This session will highlight the journey of launching the store, how students are earning Market Value Assets (MVAs), and strategies for recording and reporting this data. Participants will reflect on ways to start their own school-based enterprise or expand existing programs to provide students with real-world experiences that develop skills, build confidence, and prepare them for future careers. Learn practical ideas to empower students through hands-on, career-focused learning in your own school.
This presentation will demonstrate how to effectively use math mini-lessons and games to strengthen Tier 1 instruction for all students. Participants will explore strategies for delivering focused, high-impact mini-lessons that target essential skills while maximizing instructional time. The session will also highlight how to incorporate engaging math games that reinforce concepts, promote collaboration, and provide meaningful practice. Attendees will walk away with practical tools, ready-to-use ideas, and strategies to differentiate instruction within the core classroom. By combining direct instruction with interactive learning, this approach supports increased student engagement, deeper understanding, and improved outcomes across diverse learning needs.
