SUMMARY:Heroes Within: A Framework for Empowering Students to Own Their Learning Journeys
DESCRIPTION:In this dynamic keynote\, Aaron Hansen will address not only our new reality but also how we can truly become Hero Makers! The keynote will address the two ideas below and will align perfectly with Aaron’s breakout sessions. The New Reality: Why We Must Change. AI already outperforms us at what schools were built to teach. It writes better essays\, solves harder math\, assesses learning more effectively\, and individualizes instruction in ways schools never have. What is our new role and purpose when information is infinite\, struggle optional\, and thinking is automated? The role of a teacher is changing! It’s more difficult—but also more beautiful\, more compelling\, more soulful\, and absolutely filled with hope! The Shift: Becoming Hero Makers. In this inspiring and practical keynote\, Aaron Hansen invites educators to step into this new purpose by embracing the role of the "Hero Maker." All too often\, classrooms are filled with students who are merely "doing school"—passively sitting in compliance to get by—while others have checked out entirely\, trapped by apathy and feelings of victimization. Just as every hero needs a mentor or guide to help them face challenges\, students need educators who can help them rewrite their internal narratives from "I can't" to "I can".

SUMMARY:Active Literacy: Engaging Reluctant Readers
DESCRIPTION:“I don’t like reading” is a phrase teachers hear all too often. But\, what if reading did not mean sitting in silence? Active literacy strategies like reader’s theater transform reading into a social and engaging activity that builds fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension. Once seen as only for the elementary grades\, research now shows that reader’s theater also empowers secondary students. This session will share practical strategies — including reader’s theater\, interactive fiction\, and word games — that turn reluctant readers into confident participants.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Page: Sparking Deeper Critical Thinking Through Interactive Read Alouds
DESCRIPTION:Do your read-alouds spark surface-level recall or deep inquiry? After implementing high-level questioning frameworks in my classroom\, student engagement during literacy blocks soared. In this session\, participants will move beyond passive listening to design interactive read-aloud experiences that demand critical thinking. We will practice "think-aloud" modeling and develop strategic stopping points that require students to analyze\, infer\, and evaluate. Attendees will leave with a "Read Aloud Planner" template and a curated list of complex texts perfect for K-8 inquiry. Please bring a favorite picture book to use during our hands-on planning workshop.

SUMMARY:Fluency First Aid: Practical Interventions for Striving Readers
DESCRIPTION:This past year\, we noticed a frustrating pattern in our reading intervention data: students’ phonics skills and decoding accuracy were improving\, yet their overall reading progress had stalled. This led us to dig deeper to find the missing piece of the puzzle. The answer? Fluency! In this session\, participants will explore how targeted fluency intervention can unlock progress for striving readers who appear “stuck.” Using real case studies from an elementary intervention room\, participants will examine practical routines that build accuracy\, automaticity\, and prosody. Attendees will leave with research-informed strategies and a clear plan for strengthening fluency during intervention.

SUMMARY:Power of Pulling: Why Retrieval is the Key to Long-Term Learning
DESCRIPTION:Students often spend hours listening and reviewing curricular content\, yet 70% of new information is forgotten within 24 hours. This isn't a lack of effort\; it's a lack of retrieval. This session empowers 7-12 educators to move students from "looking over" material to "pulling it out\," making learning stick for good. Groundbreaking research by Roediger & Karpicke (2006) reveals that retrieval practice produces significantly higher long-term retention than repetitive reading\, regardless of student ability. Based on this research and the research of others\, we offer a toolkit of “Power Ups” —quick\, evidence-based habits that turn every lesson into a lasting memory.

SUMMARY:LITTLE students reading BIG words: multisyllabic words in the elementary classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learning to read is the primary work of K-2 classrooms. That work includes learning letters\, sounds\, and lots of words...mostly one or two syllables with blends\, digraphs\, and vowel teams. All of that is needed...but so is learning to read multisyllabic words. If little readers don't learn to read big words\, then the shift from "learning to read" in K-2 classrooms to "reading to learn" in 3-5 classrooms is going to be difficult. At the end of this presentation\, participants will be able to enhance the work they are already doing to include bigger words in reading and writing!

SUMMARY:Spell Yeah!- a Crash Course in Spelling for Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Many teachers lack confidence in our own ability to spell because we did not receive adequate training in phonics in elementary school or college. So\, when students come to us with questions about spelling\, many of us fall upon the misconception that “English is such a tricky language." The truth is that 97% of words follow a pattern of rules. When teachers understand these rules\, we are better equipped to support our students. Teachers of all grade levels and subject areas will leave this session with a deeper understanding of spelling rules and resources to support their students.

SUMMARY:The Clarity Blueprint
DESCRIPTION:According to John Hattie’s research\, teacher clarity is a top-ten influence on achievement. Without it\, students are 50% less likely to invest the mental energy required to stay on task. Constantly responding to “Why do I have to learn this?” is exhausting! In today’s distracted secondary classrooms\, clarity is a lifeline. In this interactive presentation\, you’ll gain a ready-to-use toolkit to frame every lesson so students can confidently answer: What am I learning today\, why does it matter\, and how will I know when I have learned it?

SUMMARY:Beyond the Dance: Turning Prom Planning into Powerful Real-World Learning
DESCRIPTION:What if some of the most meaningful real-world learning experiences for students aren’t found in curriculum guides—but in the traditions and responsibilities already embedded in school life? As a prom sponsor\, I quickly realized that students were developing critical life and career skills without a single worksheet or rubric in sight. Managing deadlines\, communicating professionally with peers and adults\, handling financial responsibility\, and navigating accountability became authentic learning experiences with real stakes. In this session\, participants will examine how prom planning naturally mirrors project management and workplace expectations. Through real examples\, reflection strategies\, and classroom connections\, attendees will learn how to identify similar opportunities in their own schools and intentionally make the learning visible—without over-structuring or losing authenticity. This session is ideal for educators seeking practical\, low-lift ways to implement Real World Learning that truly prepares students for life beyond the classroom.
